My mom prior to the pension for 10 years was maintaining a home on $1100 a month so a lot of maintenance went undone. My husband and I helped her as much as we financially could but now b/c house outside needs work she cannot get homeowners insurance until it’s fixed. We can work on it but it would help if there was an org out there to help widows of vets fix their home. Any ideas? TYIA

Call your Office of Aging to see if there are any grants available. Just keep in mind that the homeowner has to reside in her house for a number of years after the fix up. Call your local VA office and see if they know of any programs.

Otherwise, she may need to get an equity loan. If it was me, I would get the loan, fix up the house and then sell it paying off equity loan. I would have had to eventually done something like this with my Mom. Her SS and pension would not have covered taxes, upkeep and utilities. In the 10 yrs since Dad died, the cost of living had really gone up. By selling the house it will give Mom a cushion, a nice little apartment where she only pays electric and TV.

Wounded Warriors? Local American Legion posts may have a network of contractors that will do repairs for a lesser fee for a senior.
I’m not sure of other sources of funding or if it exists.
Good luck!

Contact your local Habitat for Humanity - although they build new houses for low income families, a lot of their workers (at least in my area) are retired and semi-retired handy folks and construction trades. A couple of times the local VFW has purchased materials and the Habitat guys donated their labor for home modifications.

There are also church programs which can help. I know, or can only imagine what you are facing. It's hard to be in need. But often we are on behalf of elder. So, habitat for humanity, aging council, other resources listed, start with those. We could all. ALL be in your shoes, but for any thing. Please let us know what worked. We learn from each other.

Contact any and all veterans assistance, associations, organizations, businesses, etc. and ask them how to help this widow of one of our countries heroes. I bet they will be able to help, especially if you can get the media to cover the story.
